Gosling was even rumored to be attached to the project during its development stage but nothing was officially confirmed. • Bradley Cooper began planning his vision for this film while working as a producer on American Sniper (2014), which was directed by Clint Eastwood. Cooper originally wanted Beyoncé to star alongside him, however, negotiations soon failed, and Cooper wanted Lady Gaga instead. After Cooper and Gaga performed a screentest together, Warner Brothers executives were impressed with their on-screen chemistry and greenlit the project.
