Am I The Only Crazy Person Who Feels Nostalgic When Thinking About The 1992 B-Movie Horror 'Mikey'?!

September 9, 2020

“Remember, Jason and Freddie were kids once, too…”

More often than not I find myself thinking about movies from my childhood, and thanks to mostly poor parental supervision the majority of those movies are in the horror genre which has surely helped to mold me into the degenerate I am today. When the movie that comes to mind is the direct-to-video relic ‘Mikey’ that is so unknown people look at me like I have two heads when I bring it up, I am naturally intrigued enough to revisit this childhood memory.

Are you familiar with the Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne comedy Instant Family? Well its fantastic, and it serves as the perfect “why adopting is such a great thing movie”. Well, this is the exact opposite of that. Mikey seems like a sweet kid who is just catching a bad break as he continues to bounce around the foster care system. He doesn’t have a problem getting adopted, everyone loves Mikey. The problem is that somehow the families who take him in always end up violently murdered, and poor Mikey is forced to find yet another new home. I know what you’re thinking, man this kid has some terrible luck and can you even imagine how traumatized he must be?! Mikey gets a fresh start yet again and falls for the teenage girl next-door, but needless to say things soon take a dark turn.

Spoiler alert, Mikey is an OG psychopath - I mean you cross this kid and you won’t see the sun come up ever again, thats a cold hard fact. Just ask his adoptive sister from the films opening who refused to admit something was her idea getting him into trouble, or his adoptive mother who thought slapping him across the face was a good idea. Don’t even get me started on the poor dad who was just minding his own business at work during all of this, but he surely got his once he finally made it home. “No dad, just because the baseball bat is out doesn’t mean he was playing baseball earlier, but he will be soon enough”. Even worse, he has the foster care system, law enforcement, and his therapist fooled to the point where they think HE is the victim.

This kid is just straight murdering entire families, playing the sympathy card, and going to Chili’s for dinner right after. If Ted Bundy had a kid, this is exactly how he would have turned out. The timeline actually lines up, Bundy was executed in 1989, plenty of time for him to have this kid who eventually lands in foster care only to take over the family business a few years later.

Mikey is played by Family Ties (1986-1989) and Blank Check (1994) actor Brian Bonsall, who seems to have slipped out of the acting game after a few TV show and movie appearances in 1994. As I mentioned this is very much a throwback B-movie horror BUT I watched it a bunch of times as a kid and in my twisted mind it still holds up today. One of my favorite things about this movie is the score which is true early 90’s B-movie horror which really brings me back. Plus, it would be nice to have someone to talk to about it since as far as I can tell I am the only person who has actually seen it.

And don’t worry, Mikey did make the technological leap to DVD so feel free to add it to your collection, or if you can find the VHS, even better.

Mikey is currently streaming on Prime Video.

New Girl's Lamorne Morris Stars In The Hulu Original Series 'Woke' Available to Stream This Week

September 8, 2020

New Girl is easily one of my favorite sitcoms, and I swear I have seen every episode at least 3 times. Its a show you can just throw on and enjoy on a whim which I like. One of the main characters in the show, the cat loving goofball Winston, is played by Chi-Town native Lamorne Morris.

Fun fact - before becoming an actor he actually really wanted to play basketball which is why that was written into his backstory in the show.

New Girl was the big break Morris needed, running from 2011 until 2018, and since he has had a supporting role in some big films including Barber Shop: The Next Cut, and more recently Bloodshot. Now he has landed himself a starring role in a comedy series on a premiere streaming service, and I couldn’t be happier for the guy.

Inspired by the life and art of cartoonist Keith Knight, the Hulu original series ‘Woke’ revolves around "Keef," a cartoonist living in San Francisco on the cusp of mainstream success when an unexpected incident changes everything.

The series is set to premiere on Hulu September 9th. Watch the trailer below.

Romantic Comedy 'Love, Guaranteed' Starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. Is Now Streaming on Netflix

September 8, 2020

Who are you kidding, whether or not the wife needs it or you are just in the mood for something different, romantic comedies have their place in the world of movies. One of the latest exclusives from Netflix is Love, Guaranteed, starring Rachael Lee Cook, Damon Wayans Jr., and Heather Graham.

Aside from the fact that the Wayans family is just too damn big and I always get the brothers mixed up (I just try to remember Damon Wayans Jr. is Coach in New Girl, that helps), Love, Guaranteed has a solid cast lead by Cook and Wayans Jr., and touches on a subject that most people in their late 20’s early 30’s are well versed on, online dating.

Online dating services are known to be a blessing and a curse (for the last time Tinder is/was for hook-ups, not actual dating), and can provide you with your fair share of nightmare scenarios but hopefully in the end you get lucky and find someone you don’t want to kick out of the bed first thing in the morning, or even the same night. Either way, if you need to mix it up a bit and are trying to score some points with the lady this is a solid choice.

Love, Guaranteed is now streaming on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.

Netflix Horror Comedy The Babysitter Returns With a Sequel 'The Babysitter: Killer Queen' Available to Stream This Week

September 8, 2020

In 2017, Netflix dropped the over-the-top stylish horror comedy The Babysitter, which was met with open arms by critics and audiences alike. Directed by McG, the man behind We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, and This Means War, the film had a very solid cast lead by Bella Thorne and Robbie Amell. It told the story of Cole, played by Judah Lewis, who had a babysitter hired to keep an eye on him while his parents were away. Cole feels like something is off and decides to spy on this babysitter of his, played by Thorne, and gets much more than he bargained for.

Fast forward three years and thanks to the success of the first film, McG and the cast is back for yet another go around with The Babysitter: Killer Queen. The film picks up two years later and Cole is now living a new nightmare, high school. Unfortunately for him and his friends, his past isn’t as far behind as he previously thought. If you enjoy a well-made horror comedy with eye candy for everyone, this should fit the bill.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen is set to hit Netflix on September 10th. Watch the new trailer below.

New Horror Movie 'Come Play' Starring Gillian Jacobs Will Change The Way You Look At Technology - Watch The Trailer Now

September 2, 2020

The Fall is upon us and Halloween is fast approaching which means one thing, horror movies!!

A new trailer just dropped for the upcoming horror thriller Come Play, starring Gillian Jacobs and John Gallagher Jr. The film tells the story of a monster named Larry that manifests itself through smart phones and mobile devices. It is based on the 2017 short film of the same name.

I know the premise sounds corny but the trailer actually looks pretty good, the true test will be how well the kids in the film do as that can be very hit or miss when it comes to effective horror movies.

Come Play will hit theaters just in time for Halloween on October 30th. Watch the trailer below

The Team Behind Never Hike Alone Returns With Another Friday the 13th Fan Film 'Never Hike in the Snow' - Watch The Trailer

September 1, 2020

Womp Stomp Films, the team behind the Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone, is back yet again doing what Hollywood hasn’t been able to do in over a decade, delivering to fans more of the hockey mask wearing psychopath we all know and love. Their latest project is Never Hike in the Snow: A Friday the 13th Fan Film, and it looks to be another gem.

Never Hike Alone released in 2017 thanks to a great deal of fan support and we quickly snagged the Blu-ray to support the cause and did a review which you can find here.

Never Hike in the Snow picks up 3-months prior to Never Hike Alone, and is centered around the disappearance of a Crystal Lake local, who went for a hike in the woods and never returned. The local sheriff and deputy search for answers, but soon town local Tommy Jarvis, played by Thom Mathews who played Jarvis in one of my favorite entries in the franchise Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, comes into the picture adamant that his old friend Jason is responsible.

I am a DIEHARD Friday the 13th fan and will support any project that comes through for a fan base that wants nothing more than a 13th movie.

Find out more about the fan series of Friday the 13th films and be sure to pre-order the Blu-ray at the following link https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/never-hike-in-the-snow-the-final-call#/

Netflix Dropped The First Trailer For The Haunting of Hill House Follow-Up 'The Haunting of Bly Manor' And It Is TERRIFYING - Watch It Now

August 31, 2020

Summer has been fun but the Fall season is upon us, and that means apple picking, pumpkins, and of course, Halloween. This is an exciting time of year for horror fanatics like myself as we start to re-watch all of our favorite scary movies. Two years ago, series creator Mike Flanagan, the man behind Oculus and HUSH, brought pure joy to the horror community with the Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House.

I mean the show was simply amazing - it was well-acted, the production value and cinematography was on point, and most importantly it had a legit “give you chills” horror feel throughout.

Fast forward to the 2020, a year that has been one big horror movie in all of the worst ways, and Flanagan is back with a follow-up series - The Haunting of Bly Manor. It promises to stay true to what made Hill House so good and the trailer does not disappoint.

Watch the trailers below but proceed with caution, you might pee a little. The Haunting of Bly Manor is set to hit Netflix on October 9th.

The Struggle Is Real For Kevin Hart and Beanie Sigel in the 2002 Throwback Comedy Paper Soldiers

August 30, 2020

This damn pandemic has been hard on all of us, and even though for awhile there we thought the service industry was hit the hardest, we forgot about the B&E (breaking and entering) game. I mean sure you, can’t run a profitable restaurant without in-person dining etc, but try having a career based solely on robbing houses while people aren’t home during this, it ain’t happenin’!

Kevin Hart feels the pain in the 2002 comedy Paper Soldiers, playing the role of Shawn, an overeager burglar already on parole but lacking the ability to provide for his family. Hoping to make ends meet, he decides that the B&E game is where the money is, and asks an old school thief to show him the ropes. Unfortunately for Shawn, a neighborhood hothead with a hair-trigger temper takes a liking to him, ensuring that any chance of success in his new endeavor is short lived. Paper Soldiers is a funny under-the-radar comedy nobodies heard of, but it is worth checking out.

Paper Soldiers is currently available on Starz and on DVD through Best Buy, Target, or Wal-Mart for the very reasonable price of $7.99. Watch the trailer below.
