Jessica Chastain Stars In Spy Thriller 'The 355' [TRAILER]

October 6, 2020

Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, Sebastian Stan, and Edgar Ramirez round out the cast in the intense spy thriller ‘The 355’ from the producers of the Jason Bourne movies?!

Yeah, I am ALL IN on this. At first I expected something more along the lines of Charlie’s Angels, but after watching the trailer this is darker and certainly more Jason Bourne meets American Assassin - and it looks damn good.

When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, wild card CIA agent Mason “Mace” Brown will need to join forces with rival badass German agent Marie, former MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist Khadijah, and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela, on a lethal, breakneck mission to retrieve it, while also staying one-step ahead of a mysterious woman, Lin Mi Sheng, who is tracking their every move.

The 355 is set to hit theaters on January 15th, 2021. Watch the gritty new trailer below.

Riz Ahmed Stars In Amazon Prime Original Drama 'Sound of Metal' [TRAILER]

September 30, 2020

The Place Beyond the Pines writing duo Darius Marder and Derek Cianfrance are teaming up for the Amazon Prime Original drama Sound of Metal, with Marder in the directors chair. Starring Riz Ahmed and Olivia Cooke, the film tells the story of a heavy-metal drummer's life that is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing.

Ahmed, an incredible actor who starred in one of the best drama series you can watch HBO’s The Night Of, learned sign language for this role and also spent 6 months learning to play the drums - now that is dedication! I am a big fan of Ahmed as an actor, as well as the cretaive tandem of Marder and Cianfrance so I am looking forward to this.

New Horror 'The Dark and the Wicked' Looks Absolutely Terrifying [TRAILER]

September 11, 2020

I am a horror movie guy through and through, but finding a horror movie that actually scares me has become quite a task. I have learned that for me the scariest movies are rooted in the scariest thing of all, which is of course, reality.

The movie that stands out for me the most as of late is Hereditary, a movie that slowly drags you down a path of pure dread and never lets go. I also really enjoyed Relic, which admittedly reinforces the fact that deranged old ladies creep me out. Which brings me to yet another horror movie that seems to blend both of the things I enjoy most about horror movies, The Dark and the Wicked.

Written and directed by Brian Bertino, the man who brought us The Strangers (2008), and also produced the under-the-radar indie horror The Blackcoats Daughter (REVIEW), which I thought was fantastic, so it seems he has a knack for legit horror.

The synopsis for The Dark and the Wicked is as follows:

“On a secluded farm in a nondescript rural town, a man is slowly dying. His family gathers to mourn, and soon a darkness grows, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that something evil is taking over the family.”

The film stars Marin Ireland (AMC’s The Killing, The Irishman) and Michael Abbott Jr. The trailer leaves you with more questions than answers and is absolutely drenched in pure dread, just the way I like it. I can’t wait for this to come out.

The Dark and the Wicked is set to hit limited theaters on November 6th.

Sci-Fi Horror 'Possessor' Will Haunt Your Dreams [TRAILER]

September 11, 2020

“Lose control…”

Let me just start by saying I can really appreciate a well executed trailer, and this one in particular is fantastic. In my mind a trailer should use a less is more approach while still intriguing the viewer, and that is absolutely the case here.

From writer/director Brandon Cronenberg, Possessor is a visceral sci-fi thriller about elite, corporate assassin Tasya Vos. Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people’s bodies to execute high profile targets. As she sinks deeper into her latest assignment she becomes trapped inside the mind of a man who may rival her violent tendencies threatening her existence.

poss 2.jpg

Possessor is already receiving widespread critical acclaim for its unique cinematography and incredible imagery, which is obvious in the trailer. Not that I care all that much what the majority of people sharing their “opinions” on Rotten Tomatoes have to say anyway, but they may be on to something here. Just watching the trailer it sort of reminds me of a darker version of Predestination, starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook.

The cast includes Andrea Riseborough (Mandy, Nocturnal Animals), Christopher Abbott (Girls, It Comes at Night), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Atypical), and Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game).

Possessor will hit limited theaters and On-Demand October 9th.

Adam Sandler is Mr. Halloween in the Netflix Comedy-Horror 'Hubie Halloween' [TRAILER]

September 10, 2020

Adam Sandler has his fair share of haters, more than most actors I would say. The majority of the hate came full force when Sandler inked his first movie deal with Netflix churning out what most consider to be the dumpster fire version of Hollywood film. But you can’t argue with the fact that even with all of the goofy thrown together movies he has put out Adam Sandler is a fantastic actor, and the recent Uncut Gems is proof of that. He actually voiced his Oscar snub in an interview saying he would put out the worst movie ever on purpose purely out of spite - but I "don’t think” he was referring to this movie.

Hubie Halloween tells the story of Hubie Dubois, a Salem man who embodies everything that we all love about Halloween. Unfortunately for Hubie, he is widely considered to be a joke by adults and children alike. But this year things are different, and the town of Salem, MA, will need Hubie to save Halloween.

Sure, it will be over-the-top and goofy to no end, but I think this will be an enjoyable shut your brain off kind of seasonal movie - plus the cast is absolutely stacked.

The all-star cast includes many of Sandlers regulars and a few others including Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Maya Rudolph, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Michael Chiklis, and Kenan Thompson. The film also features co-stars Tim Meadows, June Squibb, and Shaquille O’Neal.

Little Nicky director Steven Brill is behind the camera, with Sandler co-writing the script with Tim Herlihy.

Hubie Halloween will hit Netflix October 7th. Watch the new trailer below.

A High School Girl Swaps Bodies With A Deranged Serial Killer in Blumhouse Horror 'Freaky' [TRAILER]

September 10, 2020

On Friday the 13th, November 13th to be more specific, Blumhouse will drop its latest horror thriller, Freaky, telling the story of a teenage girl who swaps bodies with a crazed serial killer.

Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler is just trying to survive the never-ending nightmare that is the halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the newest target of The Butcher, her town’s infamous serial killer, her senior year becomes the least of her worries.

Writer/director Christopher Landon is the man behind the film, and previously delivered to us Happy Death Day, as well as a few films in the Paranormal Activity franchise. Landon has a knack for horror comedy, and it seems he may have hit the nail on the head yet again.

Freaky stars Kathryn Newton (Blockers, HBO’s Big Little Lies), Vince Vaughn, and Alan Ruck (HBO’s Succession), and is sure to satisfy fans of the Happy Death Day Films. Watch the new trailer below.

Sundance Official Selection 'Charm City Kings' Set To Hit HBO Max This October [TRAILER]

September 10, 2020

Stock has been sky high for the drama Charm City Kings, inspired by the documentary 12 O’Clock Boys, ever since it was acknowledged as an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, a great honor for any film looking for a little hype.

Starring Jahi Di’Allo Winston and rapper/actor Meek Mill, who provides a breakout performance, Charm City Kings is a gritty coming-of-age tale. Fourteen-year old Mouse desperately wants to join The Midnight Clique, the infamous Baltimore dirt bike riders who rule the summertime streets. When he manages to catch the attention of Midnight's leader, Blax (Meek Mill), who takes him under his wing, Mouse soon finds himself torn between the straight-and-narrow and a road filled with fast money and violence.

I am intrigued by the bike/atv scene in Baltimore which is highlighted in Ryan Coogler’s Creed, and have been keeping a close eye on this film for quite some time. Once HBO acquired the rights to release on its HBO Max platform, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would finally check this out myself.

Watch the new HBO Max trailer for Charm City Kings below. It is set to hit the streaming service on October 8th.

Am I The Only Crazy Person Who Feels Nostalgic When Thinking About The 1992 B-Movie Horror 'Mikey'?!

September 9, 2020

“Remember, Jason and Freddie were kids once, too…”

More often than not I find myself thinking about movies from my childhood, and thanks to mostly poor parental supervision the majority of those movies are in the horror genre which has surely helped to mold me into the degenerate I am today. When the movie that comes to mind is the direct-to-video relic ‘Mikey’ that is so unknown people look at me like I have two heads when I bring it up, I am naturally intrigued enough to revisit this childhood memory.

Are you familiar with the Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne comedy Instant Family? Well its fantastic, and it serves as the perfect “why adopting is such a great thing movie”. Well, this is the exact opposite of that. Mikey seems like a sweet kid who is just catching a bad break as he continues to bounce around the foster care system. He doesn’t have a problem getting adopted, everyone loves Mikey. The problem is that somehow the families who take him in always end up violently murdered, and poor Mikey is forced to find yet another new home. I know what you’re thinking, man this kid has some terrible luck and can you even imagine how traumatized he must be?! Mikey gets a fresh start yet again and falls for the teenage girl next-door, but needless to say things soon take a dark turn.

Spoiler alert, Mikey is an OG psychopath - I mean you cross this kid and you won’t see the sun come up ever again, thats a cold hard fact. Just ask his adoptive sister from the films opening who refused to admit something was her idea getting him into trouble, or his adoptive mother who thought slapping him across the face was a good idea. Don’t even get me started on the poor dad who was just minding his own business at work during all of this, but he surely got his once he finally made it home. “No dad, just because the baseball bat is out doesn’t mean he was playing baseball earlier, but he will be soon enough”. Even worse, he has the foster care system, law enforcement, and his therapist fooled to the point where they think HE is the victim.

This kid is just straight murdering entire families, playing the sympathy card, and going to Chili’s for dinner right after. If Ted Bundy had a kid, this is exactly how he would have turned out. The timeline actually lines up, Bundy was executed in 1989, plenty of time for him to have this kid who eventually lands in foster care only to take over the family business a few years later.

Mikey is played by Family Ties (1986-1989) and Blank Check (1994) actor Brian Bonsall, who seems to have slipped out of the acting game after a few TV show and movie appearances in 1994. As I mentioned this is very much a throwback B-movie horror BUT I watched it a bunch of times as a kid and in my twisted mind it still holds up today. One of my favorite things about this movie is the score which is true early 90’s B-movie horror which really brings me back. Plus, it would be nice to have someone to talk to about it since as far as I can tell I am the only person who has actually seen it.

And don’t worry, Mikey did make the technological leap to DVD so feel free to add it to your collection, or if you can find the VHS, even better.

Mikey is currently streaming on Prime Video.

Watch the vintage trailer and a pretty cool montage celebrating the pint sized psychopath below.

New Girl's Lamorne Morris Stars In The Hulu Original Series 'Woke' Available to Stream This Week

September 8, 2020

New Girl is easily one of my favorite sitcoms, and I swear I have seen every episode at least 3 times. Its a show you can just throw on and enjoy on a whim which I like. One of the main characters in the show, the cat loving goofball Winston, is played by Chi-Town native Lamorne Morris.

Fun fact - before becoming an actor he actually really wanted to play basketball which is why that was written into his backstory in the show.

New Girl was the big break Morris needed, running from 2011 until 2018, and since he has had a supporting role in some big films including Barber Shop: The Next Cut, and more recently Bloodshot. Now he has landed himself a starring role in a comedy series on a premiere streaming service, and I couldn’t be happier for the guy.

Inspired by the life and art of cartoonist Keith Knight, the Hulu original series ‘Woke’ revolves around "Keef," a cartoonist living in San Francisco on the cusp of mainstream success when an unexpected incident changes everything.

The series is set to premiere on Hulu September 9th. Watch the trailer below.

Romantic Comedy 'Love, Guaranteed' Starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. Is Now Streaming on Netflix

September 8, 2020

Who are you kidding, whether or not the wife needs it or you are just in the mood for something different, romantic comedies have their place in the world of movies. One of the latest exclusives from Netflix is Love, Guaranteed, starring Rachael Lee Cook, Damon Wayans Jr., and Heather Graham.

Aside from the fact that the Wayans family is just too damn big and I always get the brothers mixed up (I just try to remember Damon Wayans Jr. is Coach in New Girl, that helps), Love, Guaranteed has a solid cast lead by Cook and Wayans Jr., and touches on a subject that most people in their late 20’s early 30’s are well versed on, online dating.

Online dating services are known to be a blessing and a curse (for the last time Tinder is/was for hook-ups, not actual dating), and can provide you with your fair share of nightmare scenarios but hopefully in the end you get lucky and find someone you don’t want to kick out of the bed first thing in the morning, or even the same night. Either way, if you need to mix it up a bit and are trying to score some points with the lady this is a solid choice.

Love, Guaranteed is now streaming on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.

Netflix Horror Comedy The Babysitter Returns With a Sequel 'The Babysitter: Killer Queen' Available to Stream This Week

September 8, 2020

In 2017, Netflix dropped the over-the-top stylish horror comedy The Babysitter, which was met with open arms by critics and audiences alike. Directed by McG, the man behind We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, and This Means War, the film had a very solid cast lead by Bella Thorne and Robbie Amell. It told the story of Cole, played by Judah Lewis, who had a babysitter hired to keep an eye on him while his parents were away. Cole feels like something is off and decides to spy on this babysitter of his, played by Thorne, and gets much more than he bargained for.

Fast forward three years and thanks to the success of the first film, McG and the cast is back for yet another go around with The Babysitter: Killer Queen. The film picks up two years later and Cole is now living a new nightmare, high school. Unfortunately for him and his friends, his past isn’t as far behind as he previously thought. If you enjoy a well-made horror comedy with eye candy for everyone, this should fit the bill.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen is set to hit Netflix on September 10th. Watch the new trailer below.
