There is certainly something to be said about Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, who after finding great success with their YouTube channel seemed to become film directors pretty much overnight. On YouTube where the brothers are known as RackaRacka, they built a massive following of 6.88 million subscribers making horror comedy videos and performing stunts. They began at the age of 11 doing backyard WWE inspired wrestling videos and do not try this at home Jackass style stunts.
In 2014 the brothers worked on the crew that made the horror film The Babadook, which I saw in theaters and bought when it came out on Blu-ray. Between that and It Follows, 2014 was a fantastic year for horror movies. I imagine that project helped to inspire the brothers as they worked towards making a horror movie of their own. In 2022 the brothers directed their debut horror film TALK TO ME, which was filmed in their hometown of Adelaide, and produced by Australian production company Causeway Films. The film found great success and the brothers recently confirmed that a sequel is in the works. I really liked TALK TO ME for several reasons, and it was clear that although it was their debut film, these brothers had an eye for quality cinema.
Back on topic, BRING HER BACK is a gem of a follow-up film as it brings with it all of the top-tier technical elements I fell in love with when I watched TALK TO ME, but it was also very unique and deep. This is much more of a slow-burn horror film that takes viewers on a journey, a traumatizing journey for sure, but a journey nonetheless and if you are patient it is absolutely worth it. If you go in expecting more of a traditional horror film or even just more of the spine-tingling horror you got from TALK TO ME you will be disappointed, but trust me when I say that BRING HER BACK has its own visceral signature, and some of the scenes I damn near had to look away.
It is quite clear early on that something is seriously wrong with this foster mother, but the film forces you to be patient as the pieces of the puzzle slowly come together. BRING HER BACK is so many things, but first and foremost it is top-tier filmmaking, but it is also powerful in terms of the subject matter and the overall deeper meaning of the film, and it really makes you feel something. I didn’t leave the theater feeling depressed or grossed out or anything which I thought was notable.
I had this feeling where I felt impacted by the film in a way that is sort of hard to describe. I felt sympathy for every character in the film by the end as I came to the realization that they were all victims of circumstance, and the often unbearable emotional weight of trauma and grief. Let me be very clear, BRING HER BACK is not an easy watch, but this film was crafted with purpose and intention, and as far as horror films go this movie really hit hard.
THE VERDICT
A beautifully shot slow-burn horror thriller that effectively explores extreme trauma caused by paralyzing grief in disturbing fashion, BRING HER BACK is a powerful film that will stay with you days after leaving the theater. This movie hit me hard and I honestly don’t know how you can dismiss it as anything other than a work of art. It may not have the scare factor of TALK TO ME in the sense of traditional horror, but this is a film with purpose and meaning, and it will get under your skin and stay there.
