The directorial debut for Steven Caple Jr., Creed II is the follow-up to the successful 2015 film that has brought the Rocky franchise back to the forefront. Ryan Coogler, (Fruitvale Station, Black Panther) directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the original film, but this time around he only receives credit for the characters, with Sylvester Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker (Notorious, Lowriders) taking credit for the screenplay. Ryan Coogler, who directed the first Creed, said in an interview that he wanted to direct the sequel but the timing conflicted with work he was doing for Black Panther. Coogler actually went to film school with director Steven Caple Jr..
Coogler also said in an interview that the deeper layer of the story of the first Creed was about him and his dad, so he has a strong personal attachment to the film.
