The novel the film is based on opened at number one on The New York Times young adult best-seller list, where it remained for 50 weeks. It received positive reviews and won several awards. It is Thomas' debut novel, expanded from a short story she wrote in college following the police shooting of Oscar Grant. The 1999 shooting death of Oscar Grant in Oakland, CA is also portrayed in a film entitled Fruitvale Station - Grant is portrayed by actor Michael B. Jordan.
