Until Dawn

April 20, 2025

UNTIL DAWN is a 2025 horror thriller film directed by David F. Sandberg, from a screenplay by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman. The film is based on the PlayStation Studios video game of the same name. Sandberg is no stranger to the horror genre, having previously directed Lights Out (2016), and Annabelle: Creation (2017), and even dabbled in the superhero genre with Shazam! (2019), and the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023). The film is “very loosely” based on the video game which has understandably rubbed fans the wrong way since the debut of the first trailer. I have faith this will be a very good horror movie because of the director, but I doubt it will feel very much like the game at all which I also very much enjoyed.

One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again - only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.

The cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare.

  • The actresses have said that the head coverings they wear when they go outside are like blinders, completely cutting off their peripheral vision. The actresses can't see each other unless they're looking directly at each other. They have to act largely based on what they can hear.
  • Margaret Atwood, the source novel's author, has said that she was greatly inspired by George Orwell's classic dystopian novel, 1984. Atwood makes a cameo as an aunt in episode 1. She is the one who slaps Offred when she is reluctant to join in the group shaming circle.
