The Woman King is an upcoming 2022 American historical epic film directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood (Love & Basketball, The Old Guard) and written by Dana Stevens (Safe Haven, Fatherhood) from a story conceived by Maria Bello (an actress who has starred in films such as Prisoners and Grown Ups) and Stevens.
The film, which is based on a true story, focuses on General Nanisca of the Dahomey Amazons and Nawi, an ambitious recruit. It depicts how they "fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they have lived for.”
It stars Viola Davis (Fences, The Suicide Squad), who also produced the film alongside Bello, in the lead role as General Nanisca, with Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Sheila Atim (The Underground Railroad, Bruised), Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After film series), and John Boyega (Attack the Block, Star Wars sequel trilogy) in supporting roles.
The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and will be theatrically released in the United States on September 16, 2022, by Sony Pictures Releasing. Watch the official trailer below.
