Palmer

January 30, 2021

“After 12 years in prison, former high school football star Eddie Palmer returns home to put his life back together—and forms an unlikely bond with Sam, an outcast boy from a troubled home. But Eddie's past threatens to ruin his new life and family.”

The Good

Let’s just cut to the chase, shall we? Palmer is incredible, and already one of the best movies of the year in my opinion. Not only is the overall message of the film just so genuine and timely, the characters are brought to life in such a way that you feel like you share in their journey. I can’t stand movies that come across as preachy because they want you to buy into their message, but Palmer just feels so authentic from start to finish that you never once question its intentions.

In my personal opinion, Justin Timberlake is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. Sure he’s an artist first, and an extremely talented one at that, but this dude can act. I knew he had a chance to he a legit actor after his role in the 2006 crime drama Alpha Dog. Palmer is his first lead role since Wonder Wheel (2017), and he’s back like John Wick.

Timberlake absolutely becomes Eddie Palmer right before our eyes, and not only are you rooting for him to succeed, you feel like you know him and in some strange way share in the pain of his struggle. He reminds us that sometimes second chances can extend well beyond just giving one person a shot at redemption.

The supporting cast is incredible as well, and I have to give a shout-out to my favorite grandma June Squibb, who is 91 years old! Crazy. She is amazing as the old-school no nonsense grandma who values integrity above all else. I know that we sometimes get caught up in the whole “this is the next big star!” when talking about young actors, but man am I excited about the future for Ryder Allen who was only 7 years old during filming at the end of 2019. Taking on a unique and pivotal role in the film, Allen does not miss a beat.

I read an article where he talked about how much the role meant to him and how he wanted to show viewers that sometimes something as simple as a hug can make someone’s day, and he does that and then some. His chemistry with Timberlake feels so effortless and is a big part of why this movie works so well. You’ll be cheering for this young man, that’s all I can say.

The Bad

You’ll be hard pressed to find anything negative about Palmer, trust me on that.

The Verdict

Anchored by career-defining performances from Justin Timberlake and newcomer Ryder Allen, Palmer is a heartfelt drama with a powerful message - and it is exactly the movie we all need right now. Will watching it make you a better person? Perhaps. At the very least you’ll earn enough good karma to last you a couple weeks. Highly recommended.

The Silence of the Lambs Series 'Clarice' Chilling New Trailer

January 11, 2021

The Silence of the Lambs, the intense 1991 crime thriller starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, is an absolute classic in every sense of the word. It was the jumping off point for all of the soon to release crime thrillers that would now be willing to push the limits.

CBS finally dropped the full-length trailer for it’s upcoming series Clarice, which is essentially a sequel to The Silence of the Lambs, picking up a year after the events that took place in the film. Pretty Little Liars actress Rebecca Breeds steps into the role of Jodie Fosters Clarice for the series.

The new series will premiere on Thursday February 11th, only on CBS. Check out the chilling new trailer below.

Crown Heights

January 6, 2021

“When Colin Warner is wrongfully convicted of murder, his best friend Carl ‘KC’ King devotes his life to proving Colin's innocence.”

The Good

The bread and butter of Crown Heights is undoubtedly the cast, anchored by strong performances from LaKeith Stanfield and Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha, a former Pro Bowl NFL cornerback who made upwards of $50 million dollars while playing, has transitioned into a legitimate actor which is pretty damn impressive in my opinion. I can’t help but respect a guy who chose two primary career paths consisting of two of my favorite things (movies and football, in no particular order really). Both actors have incredible on-screen chemistry throughout, and the bond they share feels genuine. Stanfield is establishing himself as one of the best actors in Hollywood.

Crown Heights tells a powerful and emotional true story, and it is very effective in doing so. The directing and cinematography is on point as well, and I really liked how they added in the flashback and memory scenes.

The Bad

Certain elements of the story felt rushed or brushed over, making me think they had to cut some scenes to get the movie closer to that hour and a half target length. More often than not doing that makes it feel like certain pieces of the puzzle are missing, and that is the case here at times particularly earlier on in the film.

I also couldn’t help but compare it to Just Mercy starring Michael B. Jordan, a superior film which has a similar story, which put Crown Heights at an obvious disadvantage.

The Verdict

Crown Heights is a well-acted drama telling yet another tragic true story of an extremely flawed justice system, and even though it isn’t perfect, it is well worth a watch. Recommended.

TED TAKES RATING - 7/10

Crown Heights is now streaming on Prime Video. Check out the trailer below.

Blow the Man Down

January 6, 2021

“Mary Beth and Priscilla Connolly attempt to cover up a gruesome run-in with a dangerous man. To conceal their crime, the sisters must go deep into the criminal underbelly of their hometown, uncovering the town’s darkest secrets.”

The Good

As a native “Mainer”, I thought it was pretty cool that Blow the man Down was filmed in the picturesque coastal Maine town of Harpswell, Maine. The story is set in fictional Easter Cove, Maine, which is a small fishing village. Filming took place among the three islands in Harpswell, all connected by bridges.

The film has a unique Fargo feel to it, which had me hooked from start to finish. The acting is spectacular, with the cast consisting of Morgan Saylor (White Girl), Sophie Lowe, June Squibb, and Margo Martindale. I am a HUGE June Squibb fan, who was in the recently released Hubie Halloween playing Adam Sandler’s mom. She is also great in the black and white comedy drama Nebraska. Margo Martindale, another one of my favorites, has been on my radar since her role in the FX series, Justified.

I really liked the blend of drama and dark humor, and the cinematography and score was easily two of my favorite elements - you could almost feel that cold ocean breeze and smell the freshly caught fish.

The Bad

Blow the Man Down can feel slow at times, but at just an hour and a half it is far from a lasting issue. I really like this style of film which is admittedly unique in its tone and delivery, so it could rub some people the wrong way who prefer more mainstream filmmaking. So yeah, not too much negative to report.

The Verdict

Blow the man Down is a well-crafted and extremely enjoyable film for a number of reasons, and even if it doesn’t end up being one of your favorites, it is still well worth a watch. Just carve out an hour and a half of your time and find a warm and comfy place in the couch, you won’t be disappointed. Fingers crossed we get more movies like this sooner rather than later. Recommended.

Nocturnal Animals

January 4, 2021

Director Tom Ford

Genre Drama | Thriller

Cast Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Rating R

Release Date December 9th, 2016

“An art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.”

Nocturnal Animals is a drama thriller directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, only his second film after 2009's A Single Man. Ford based the screenplay, which he also wrote, on the book Tony and Susan written by Austin Wright. Ford initially read the book and was so impressed by it, he immediately purchased the rights with no clear direction on when he planned to make the transition from book to the big screen. After a strong release at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival in France, Focus Pictures paid $20 million for global distribution rights after an intense bidding war. Nocturnal Animals stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Nocturnal Animals is beautifully disturbing, offering viewers a must-see experience you will not soon forget. Expertly acted, smartly written, and chilling to its very core, this is what great film is all about. I had known about Nocturnal Animals for a while and I will openly admit that after watching the trailer, all I could think was, “What the **** is this movie even about?” The mystery surrounding the film is part of what makes it so great and I feel going in not knowing what to expect is without a doubt the best way to approach Nocturnal Animals. If you enjoy a deep story that requires you to use 110% of your brainpower, look no further, this is it. Without giving too much away, imagine an experience within an experience, not quite Inception but certainly to the point where the lines are blurred and you are eventually lost in it all until the final moments. What does it all mean? What is the significance? That is a question not easily answered. Accomplished fashion designer Tom Ford is officially a force to be reckoned with in the film industry. Rarely are we treated to a film with such a seamless integration of great directing, superb acting, eye-popping cinematography, and most importantly, source material determined to leave a mark with its viewers. Make some room on the red carpet come award season because Nocturnal Animals will make its presence known.

The quality of the acting in Nocturnal Animals will give you chills. I mean it is really that good. Coming as no surprise, Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams are incredible in the lead roles. Gyllenhaal displays a range of emotion so impressive it almost felt like a culmination of some of his best roles throughout his career. That is a bold statement I know, but trust me on this. Michael Shannon is downright bone-chilling in a strong and impactful supporting role. As crazy as it might seem, the more I think about it the more I feel like Michael Shannon may have delivered my favorite overall performance, which says a lot considering how well everyone did. His character was complex and intense in a way that takes you by surprise. I feel like this role should put him up for some serious contention come award season. Aaron Taylor-Johnson shines in a role that feels very much like unfamiliar territory for the up-and-coming young actor so kudos to him.

Nocturnal Animals is a unique display of quality filmmaking from what is turning out to be a highly talented and fearless director. If you have read any of Tom Ford's interviews you know that he has a very strong personality and to go right out and say it, he simply does not care what people have to say about him or his work, specifically if the comments are negative or disparaging in any way. His latest work of art could certainly be considered an acquired taste by some, considering the nature of the content, but it is impossible to deny the game-changing lasting impact of Nocturnal Animals. I went to an early afternoon showing yesterday and I am still processing the deeper meaning of it all. This film will force you to use your brain and I personally can't wait to read the book. Oh and just a quick side note, the opening sequence will take you by surprise. Highly recommended.

Guest House

December 23, 2020

“An engaged couple's new dream home comes with one small catch -- a perennial party animal who lives in the guesthouse.”

The Good

Funny more often than not, fun to watch, and packed full of more T&A than an entire season of an HBO series, Guest House is the perfect escape from this nightmare of a year. R-rated for a reason, you will want to wait for the kids to go to bed before you watch this one - and at just under an hour and a half, you might just finish the entire thing before falling asleep on the couch.

It was great to see Pauly Shore back in the mix, and I honestly feel like he thrives with this no-holds-barred style comedy. Often feeling like an SNL skit, Guest House has a ridiculous amount of great cameos in the supporting cast, including Steve-O, Lou Ferrigno, Lou Ferrigno Jr., YouTube comedy star Ed Bassmaster, Erik Griffin (Workaholics), and Chris Kattan (A Night at the Roxbury). It felt like the entire cast was having a blast from start to finish, and I would honestly love to see some more Pauly Shore in the near future.

The Bad

The acting is often average at best, and the script could have been written by a 5th grader, but to be honest I expected that. It starts off with that teetering feeling of “should I just cut my losses and turn put something else on”, but just give it a chance it will grow on you. Guest House doesn’t hide from it’s stupidity, and for me that might be the best part. Just keep the expectations in check and it will all work out just fine.

The Verdict

Guest House is a no BS raunchy over-the-top comedy that is surely best enjoyed under the influence, and I have no issue with that. If you want to throw something on that will make you laugh and may even warrant another viewing, this is it. Just prepare for lots of drugs and nudity (mostly female). Am I grading on a curve because of the previously mentioned nudity? Perhaps, but isolation can have that effect on people. Recommended.

Ted Lasso

December 16, 2020

“Small-time football coach Ted Lasso is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.”

The Good

Full disclosure, most of the feedback will fall into this category because the Apple TV+ original comedy series Ted Lasso is hilarious and extremely well done. It is no surprise that Jason Sudeikis is phenomenal in this role, considering the character was created for him. The supporting cast was great as well, and the chemistry between Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt pretty much made the show for me.

I was also genuinely impressed by Juno Temple who played a prominent role in the show. Jeremy Swift, Nick Mohammed, Brett Goldstein, and Phil Dunster, are also fantastic. The show is paced well and never feels boring - I even found myself rewinding a number of scenes to re-watch which speaks volumes about the writing. The idea of this genuinely kind American football coach fumbling around in England as a soccer coach with zero knowledge of the sport is just great.

lasso 4.PNG

Ted Lasso is a comedy first and foremost, but what makes it more than just another 30-minute show with cheap laughs is the fact that it has a ton of heart. This show is as much about belly laughs as it is backstory and character development, and it all works so damn well. You will find yourself rooting for everyone to succeed and will even feel a bit sad when they don’t. I was so immersed I felt like I was right there with the characters which is not easy to do with a 30-minute show like this.

The Bad

Well this is awkward, I got nothin’ - maybe the fact that the season had to eventually end counts? But it has been confirmed that it will return for a 2nd season, so yeah. Nothing negative to report.

The Verdict

Ted Lasso is a MUST-WATCH series, I don’t know how I can make that any clearer. And for anyone who knows me personally, I am a huge football fan and the first person to take a shot at soccer as a sport. This show is so good it almost convinced me to start watching soccer - ALMOST. Just watch the first episode and you will be hooked.

Freaky

December 5, 2020

As is the case for many of us these days, visits to the theater are few and far between. I am someone who appreciates the theater experience and will continue to do my part to support them whenever possible. I was able to hit the IMAX a couple months ago to see Christopher Nolan's Tenet which was fantastic – I had been looking forward to that one for quite awhile so I was glad it made the leap to theaters. I have been more selective as of late as well and recently I was able to venture out to see the horror comedy Freaky, starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. From production company Blumhouse, Freaky tells the story of a teenage girl who swaps bodies with a crazed serial killer.

Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler is just trying to survive the never-ending nightmare that is the halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the newest target of The Butcher, her town’s infamous serial killer, her senior year becomes the least of her worries.  After swapping bodies with deranged serial killer, Millie discovers she has less than 24 hours before the change becomes permanent.

I am and always have been a huge fan of the slasher genre, the Friday the 13th franchise being my favorite, so the premise for Freaky stood out to me. I also really enjoyed the Happy Death Day films which share the same director, Christopher Landon. Admittedly I was just excited to be going to the movie theater again, and I was able to check out a local theater that serves a full menu as well. So there I was, a plate full of chicken tenders and waffle fries and an ice cold 24oz Allagash White with the orange slice garnish just the way I like it - now THAT is my happy place. I mean, a black and white foreign language musical could have played on that screen in front of me and I would have been content (maybe), but lucky for me it was more than the food and beer and comfy recliner that made it all worth the price of admission.

Freaky is absolutely a horror comedy, comedy first really, but it has a fun Freaky Friday meets Happy Death Day sort of premise that just worked for me. It is a very manageable length at right around an hour and a half, and is paced well. It starts out like a classic Friday the 13th film which damn near had me clapping, complete with a mask that felt like a mix between Jason and Leatherface (yes please!). The acting is great and fits the tone of the film perfectly, which has that never quite takes itself too seriously vibe which works.

Vince Vaughn is fantastic in his role and I honestly couldn't picture anyone else of his stature pulling off a serial killer and a high school girl simultaneously. Classic role reversal. Kathryn Newton, who has played her fair share of roles including Big Little Lies and Blockers, does a really great job as well. I honestly had no issue with the cast in general, it all worked for me. This is just a fun movie that will surely have a ton of re-watchability.

For the social media trolls bashing the film, I can just about guarantee you they either didn't even see it and are trying to seem cool, or mommy and daddy took away their Xbox and they are struggling to channel that anger. Or they just lack the presence of mind to actually understand what type of film Freaky is. This is not a true horror film, which should be obvious, and if it had to me put into just one genre I suppose it would be comedy but you can't ignore the legit horror elements vis-a- vis serial killers and gory murders.

Imagine Happy Death Day Meets Friday the 13th, complete with epic kills and tons of slasher nostalgia (minus the nudity though, BS I know), and that my friends sums up Freaky – a movie that is a blast from start to finish and well worth the price of admission. Recommended.

TED TAKES RATING - 8/10

Freaky is now in theaters and available On-Demand. Check out the trailer below.

Highly Anticipated 'Wonder Woman 1984' Will Hit Theaters And HBO Max This Christmas [TRAILER]

November 20, 2020

Something extra will be under the Christmas Tree this year…

Instead of delaying the inevitable, Warner Bro’s officially announced that the surefire blockbuster hit Wonder Woman 1984, would hit theaters and the HBO Max streaming platform simultaneously on Christmas Day.

This pandemic is gutting the film industry as far as theaters are concerned, but in my personal opinion this really is best case scenario. Unlike Mulan that gave the middle finger to theaters and went exclusive to Disney+ (with a hefty $29.99 price tag), Wonder Woman 1984 will give theaters a chance to fill some seats. I for one subscribe to HBO Max and still plan to see it in theaters assuming it hits my local IMAX (fingers crossed!). Maybe I will even come home and watch again from the comfort of my couch.

HBO has weathered the storm quite well as far as subscribers, but have said that the vast majority of people have yet to activate their no additional cost HBO Max subscription. The hope is that Wonder Woman 1984 will change that.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, and Kristen Wiig.

Watch the latest trailers below and prepare to be blown away on Christmas Day.

Nothing Says 2020 Like Remaking 1995 Horror Classic 'Castle Freak' [TRAILER]

November 18, 2020

“An Albanian castle with bloodthirsty creatures is inherited by a young woman.”

Stuart Gordon’s 1995 B-Movie horror gem (to some people anyway) Castle Freak is finally getting a remake. About time, right?! Growing up I was one of those kids who lacked proper adult supervision, so the original was one of the many inappropriate movies I watched growing up and it surely did a number on me. I remember waking up my older brother in the middle of the night telling him we needed to release the people we have locked in the dungeon, yeah that wasn’t great. I went ahead and purchased the film on DVD a few years ago just for the nostalgia, and it was just as messed up as I remember.

For the remake Tate Steinsiek steps into the director’s chair with Kathy Charles writing the screenplay. The plot has been changed slightly in what seems to be an attempt to appeal to more of the slasher fan base. Barbara Crampton, one of the stars of the original, is attached to the film as a producer.

The cast includes Claire Catherine, Jake Horowitz, Chris Galust, and Emily Sweet.

Castle Freak is set to hit select theaters and On-Demand December 4th courtesy of RLJE Films. Watch the brand new trailer below and be sure to let us know what you think.
